The Snowflake and the Spider

by Shane Ward

It was by chance they met at all
The sky was big and wide and tall
A snowflake fell three miles then four
One snowflake fell, with millions more

Down and down and down they fell
Where to land? No one could tell
What lay beneath them, roof or crop
or road or field or flagpole top?

A single snowflake looked below
and saw a garden white with snow
Not long to go before it topped
the pile of snow - but then it stopped!

It didn't stop upon the snow
It still had several feet to go
It lay suspended in mid air
Upon a web of silky hair

The creature came up from below
Its body dark against the snow
"Hello" it spoke. "My name is Seb
and what are you upon my web?

The snowflake said, "my name is snow
and downward is the way I go.
I do not make a single sound
I simply fall down to the ground"

The spider looked down on the floor.
The ground was white - not like before.
The snowflakes had no arms or feet.
Not something that poor Seb could eat.

The spider turned back to the flake,
"You must get off. My web might break"
The snowflake said, "In field or town
The only way I go is 'down'".

And so the spider tried all day
To shake the crystal shape away
Try as he might Seb had no luck
The flake was well and truly stuck

Out from the clouds there came the sun.
The snowflake's edge began to run.
And where the snowflake hard and set
had fallen, now was simply wet.

Where had the snowflake gone? Seb thought.
The one his spider's web had caught.
And in the night time dark and black
was when the small snowflake came back

But now the snowflake wasn't small
It wasn't very small at all
The web and flake by morning sun
Seb saw had melted into one.

A little boy came out to play
Inside the garden on that day
And where the spider's web had been
The biggest snowflake ever seen!

And people came from miles away
To see the snowflake shine that day
And Seb the spider sat quite proud
His home attracted quite a crowd

And as they left, below Seb's feet
Were tiny crumbs of bread and meat
Too small for human mouths to eat
For spiders though it was a treat!

Seb the spider ate and ate
Until the day was very late
The snowflake glistened proud all day
"All right" said Seb, "I'll let you stay"

It was by chance they met at all
The sky was big and wide and tall
And this is where our story ends
A snowflake and a spider, friends.
