"Man in a Parking Lot" by Catherine Jagoe, from Casting Off. © Parallel Press

Man in a Parking Lot

"When you have a son
you start seeing men
backwards, intuiting their childhood
selves beneath the years of accretions—
the bags and jowls, paunches,
thickened, crumpled skin,
the whole weight of the individual
personality, its freight of filters,
opinions, prejudices, habits,
likes, congealed—as if you knew them
before they even knew themselves.

So when a man stumbles toward you,
mumbling, across the Cubb's Foods parking lot,
unkempt and coatless in the snow,
and your discriminating mind says
"madman," "danger," though he never
once looks up, locked in an altered world,
fixed, unfixable, you lock your car door and then
sit there wondering how it happened,
when things started going wrong.
Knowing he was once a toddler—
for pity's sake—you find it
strange, unreal, this mane of wild
grey hair, grey beard. Somehow
you know it doesn't belong on him,
all that hair, and you don't know
how he got to be so lost, so sick, so old."

My heart goes out to the poem and the person .
Instinct would guide me to help
the person to refresh and relax ,
and rediscover the lost child in him/her .

Subtle difference between real and perceived;
where it doesn't match , best to leave things as they are .

This loving-kindness, compassion and love is not an intellectual exercise. It is actual - experiential. Happiness and love are the hallmarks of a calm, pure, serene and equanimous mind. A pure mind is a mind full of love for one and all - naturally. A liberated mind is a state of perpetual loving friendliness, compassion, equanimous joy and detatchment.

This sense of affection, this love, this quality cannot be cultivated, cannot be practised, cannot be brought about; but it must happen as naturally as breathing, as fully with great joy and delight as the sunset.

-Talks by Krishnamurti in India 1965 p.36

One necessary condition for it to happen is presence of unambiguous
channels of communication . Sometimes , it does not happen .
Then it is better to accept it that way and be at peace with whatever is .

Intellect definitely plays a role in all the emotions , including
compassion . Compassion without the assistance of reason
would not be compassion at all .
Reason ensures that compassion is in tune with the world around
and also that it does not burn itself up . Which means that a
longterm sustenance of compassion can only happen with the
help of reason .
