A Parable:

Imagine 3 guys are hanging out in Spain, around, oh, 1490 something. And, while everybody thinks, no, KNOWS the world is flat, one guy, Chris, is certain it is round.
So, you think so too, are pretty much positive, but have never actually BEEN over the horizon. So, you and Chris get in your ships and head out for the new world.
Now, the third guy, who doesn't believe the world is round, stays behind.
So, you reach the New World and now know the world is round. Imagine the perspective shift. You return and try to convince your friend the world is round. Now, he saw you disappear over the horizon and come back, so he knows some thing is going on here and even believes you. But, he hasn't experienced the perspective shift - he doesn't know For Sure. It would be a belief for him.

Imagine how it is for you! For example, when at the beach, you are free to take a boat and row past the horizon even though other people will think you are crazy and suicidal.

Hi Nemo

I enjoyed the story. It also reminds me of the first chapter in ATTD.
Here is part of it:

‘What happens when you fall off the earth’s edge?’

Is there a promise in awakening to what I truly am? Is
there something I can get out of this that will improve my
life? Will it make me a better and more successful person?
In short: What will it be like to live an awakened life? These
seem perfectly reasonable questions, and they frequently
come up during the search.

For many, the hope for a better life is the core motivation
to invest so heavily in this quest. There is, however, a
problem with these questions that prevents a direct answer,
and that is that they originate from the limited perspective
the seeker wants to transcend. The questions may
sound reasonable, but they are intrinsically flawed.

Let me give you a concrete example. Before we knew
that the earth was round, the question of where one
would end up after falling off its edge was perfectly reasonable.
From our current perspective, however, the
question makes no sense. If you were to go back in time,
you could not provide a simple answer, but would have
to explain that the earth is, in fact, round and falling
off it is not possible. This, of course, would go against
the common sense of the questioner, who would point
to the horizon and insist that he could clearly see where
the earth ended. Asking the questioner to imagine the
perspective of an astronaut would probably be seen as
a conceptual abstraction to avoid the real issue, namely:
What happens when you fall off the earth’s edge?

Awakening
Yes, There is similarity - great minds think alike (and fools seldom differ – no offense intended). LOL
The core of the idea – belief vs. knowing is there. My manager has a screen saver on her computer that says “Believe” – I find that humorous…how many would rather believe than know…? (not that there is anything wrong with that LOL)

In discussing this analogy with a friend he said - "well what if you brought back a totally unknown bird species"
My point was, well the one who had not experienced would find a way to rationalize.
Even chaining the guy to a mast and bodily *taking* him to the new world, if he is not ready, will claim it's an illusion (chuckle) or mirage or hypnosis, etc.

A good example of this is the movie: "They Live" - an excellent (IMHO) treatment of the issues around "helping" others to wake up.....The main character puts on “hoffman” glasses (special type of sunglasses – named for Albert Hoffman?) and can now see the aliens living amongst us. He tries to get an acquaintance to JUST PUT ON THE GLASSES for second – NO WAY , he won’t be made to do it – BIG fight ensues…etc…

love,

joe
Very Happy

Hi Nemo

From one fool to another (or is the only one Very Happy ) thank you for mentioning this movie; it's now added to my Amazon wish-list.
