Watching an exceptionally bad movie last night, the main character is dosed with a drug called "Oblivion" and loses all memory of who he is. He forgets his own story. Now, even though that has happened, he still thinks/imagines/believes himself to be a person. Still a separate individual with choice and volition that can affect the "real" world of time and space and others he exists in. In other words, he still "has" or believes he is his ego.
It brought up the idea that our memory is what make us the person we think we are - the story of who we are.
But even without memory, there is this belief we are a separate individual with choice and volition that can affect the "real" world of time and space and others we exist in.
This is what I take to be what the symbol "Ego" points to.

So, getting "free of ego" or the "death of the ego" points to where this belief no longer exists.
So, Seeing happens, but no one sees
Hearing happens, but no one hears
Thinking happens, but no one thinks
Acting happens, but no one acts.
And, by extension, this is what is meant when it is said: for you to try and get free of your ego will never succeed, because there is still the idea that 'someone' is doing something, can act, and so the illusion of a separate individual who can act is sustained even in the face of trying to wipe that out.

Yes Nemo.......no escape from an unconditional, unavoidable liberation that you dont need.
