There is an interesting set of posts and responses about World of Warcraft - a multi player online role playing game on Slash dot org.
Metaphors abound here. I find the (apparent) discussion by (apparent) people about (apparent) conduct inside and outside a (apparent) game to be particualrly relevant.( apparently)
enjoy

some of the (IMHO) entertaining/ironic posts:
Hey, it's all 1's and 0's in WoW. And you can't have 1's consorting with other 1's while 0's consort with other 0's. Why if that happened the first time a big, nasty XOR came along everything would become nothing, and then where would you be?

What next?
He's playing a Female character... That's not right!!!
She's playing a Male Orc...
It's a freaking Game. A ROLE playing game. This is insane... _________________ Expanding Heart & Melting Mind

My wife and I play WOW a lot. It's great fun. And I think that the analogies to all of this stuff we talk about here are plentiful.
My question is this.
In WOW the "player" is in complete control of his avatar. And the avatar is just a puppet that does not even "know" or "think" he exists.
Where does that leave me. I am in the game world like a game avatar. I have the impression that I have the limited awareness that my avatar would be expected to have. My true Self is the player. But I as yet cannot perceive that as being my true experience. I think I am the avatar.
My Self must decide to drop the illusion, it would seem. My avatar self (me - Dave) cannot seem to will the illusion to drop.

P.S. Going for the "stop" tomorrow. Wish me luck! |
