I had been with Fred for two years.
He was in the last stages of ALS and the only things that he could move were his eyes and his mouth.
His wife had a friend that visited about once a month.
She was scattered and confused and talked a lot about how miserable her life was.
That day she started in on her family.....her husband was emotionally indifferent ....drank far to much.....and she suspected that he was having an affair with someone at work.
Her sixteen year old daughter was on dope and refused to go to school.
Fred listened with rapt attention as her misery stretched out into the afternoon.
After as long pause...she took a breath and said:
"How does that make you feel Fred?"
He had tears in his eyes and after the normal pause, during which he accumulated the energy to speak......... in a barely audible voice said:
"It makes me feel sad."
By then we all had tears in our eyes...........but I think for different reasons.
