Gautama finally tired of the various yogas and
aesthetic practices.
He sat as we all know under the Bodhi tree
and didn't move till he had achieved his goal,
which was to know the Truth.

Yet he was a man like me.
So who made something happen?
Who decided to sit?
Who reckoned enough was enough of the fakir stuff?

It's hard I reckon.
And to make it harder someone may well respond
writing that Gautama is in my head.

Hell I can't even cause a maiden to bring
me milk and honey.

It is Life Its Self
that surges through
this syanptic-interface.....
strutting its stuff.

It anticipates the light
...ruffles its feathers...
stretches its neck....and
opens its mouth:

Ahh......ahh......a.......aaaaaaah

Ok .. so slowly for this dense one here ... let me check with you brianpeter.

A man sat down but still had ideas about truth?
At some point these ideas were let go of - he became silent.
A Buddha stood up ... an awakened one because the ideas were ignored or let go of?

Is this is the right direction?

If so then you probably know what's happening here.
What let go?
A mind? ( I mean it can do some pretty weird stuff right?)
If the answer is consciousness or awareness then really
there's a big koan klanging in the brain ...
Consciousness or awareness always knew.

Well the thread is called it's hard I reckon.

btw really liking the statement about no longer any idea!
It makes sense even to me.
I just don't know yet how to let go of ideas.

Makara,
I don't know whether a man called Gautama ever sat down for truth, and neither do you and neither does anyone else. It's a story you are taking as true, with an outcome you like the sound of and want for yourself.
I don't know anything about anything and no longer get caught up in these endless mental gymnastics, imagining they will lead to their own obliteration.
All that is known here for certain is this fact of BEING. There is no agonising about WHAT is being or WHY.
Why or how this should be so I don't know or care. The not knowing or caring is fine and there is no desire for any further clarification in philosophical or any other mind sourced terms.
This one simply stopped caring about any of it when it was seen that what I AM is wholly and utterly and infinitely subjective and that the long quest to objectify THIS is, of course, impossible. What would be objectified and by whom? The one seeing cannot also be seen. Who would then be seeing what?
But....see how easy it is to slip into the speculative nonsense....?
The ONE seeing is what you are. I know how cliched and pat this sounds, but it is, really, unsayable. This is not something which can be believed, but it can be clearly seen. Then the very instant that thought comes in to take hold of it, it's missed.
This one is old with aches and pains. THIS is fresh, and nothing is wrong. Nothing else matters here

Here brianpeter something is touched.
The post is beautiful and honest,
thank you.
May there be warmth and balm for the aches and pains.

Isn't that just so true.

Toombaru - sometimes the nit picking displayed
gets close to annoying.
We all know the inadequacy of words.
The statement made by brianpeter was (to the one who posed
the question in the O.P.) pretty good.

It's understandable that Gautama sat down
in the process he arrived at a point wherein
Quote:
there was no longer any idea about what the truth might be like

Thus freed from thought & expectationi
he 'became' the awakened one.
Why do you have to nit pick that?
You're original response was more apt

And you are right.........when that is brought to one's attention.....it can be very annoying.

All right - let's be supportive for a moment and
understand what brianpeter was expressing.
How would you have expressed it?
('It' being that the man who sat down
was now beyond thinking)
