I don't want to bring this down to the level of an Agony Aunt
column, but I do wonder if you have anything to say
about addiction, perhaps putting it in a larger context.
I guess I am asking about cravings and obsessive
behaviour.
Answer:
What came up when I considered your question was
that the root problem of all problems is the sense
of being a separate entity and being identified as
the body/mind.
From this "root" can grow a mighty tree with
countless branches and leaves. Addiction is one
of those growths and to work on such problems
leaf by leaf, branch by branch is a daunting
and never ending task.
My suggestion is to go directly for the root.
Find out that you are not the body/mind.
If or when this becomes absolutely clear, the
problem of addiction is gone. Addiction may
or may not continue, but it is no longer
'your' addiction and 'your' problem.
The body/mind Wayne Liquorman was struck sober,
but Nisargadatta was addicted to nicotine, and
died from it. He did not consider his name, body
or mind as his identity.
Addiction may be of the body, it may be of the mind
and it is one of the ways awareness appears to it self.
That what you truly are is not addicted to anything.
It is freedom itself and you are THAT.
For as much as a year Satan continued these visits, but at last he came less often, and then for a long time he did not come at all. This always made me lonely and melancholy. I felt that he was losing interest in our tiny world and might at any time abandon his visits entirely. When one day he finally came to me I was overjoyed, but only for a little while. "You perceive, now, that these things are all impossible except in a dream. You perceive that they are pure and puerile insanities, the silly creations of an imagination that is not conscious of its freaks--in a word, that they are a dream, and you the maker of it.
