Question: You quoted Ramana: "Understanding is everything."
This sounds to me as if understanding is a prerequisite for realization.
Do I have to interpret this as a portal? If the 'me' is a dreamfigure, who
has to do the effort to come to understanding? Or is understanding a divine
gift; is it 'grace' that annihilates the illusion of a seperate 'me' in the
apparent seeker?
Answer: Understanding as used here is not a prerequisite but another pointer to -or label for- realization. When it's understood that there is no separate ‘I’ doing the understanding then there simply is understanding.
Often the word 'seeing' is used instead of understanding. This ‘seeing’ simply sees, without the idea that there is an ‘I’ that is somehow doing the seeing. It is not limited to the sight of the eye, and when the eyes close, the closing of the eyes is seen.
In this seeing, the blood circulates, the breath comes and goes, the tides roll in and out, the rivers flow, the clouds drift by and the planets move around the sun. It is seen that all this appears to happen without a separate doer in charge.
Nothing has to be done for IT to be as IT IS. If anything has to be done at all, it is to verify this truth inside. Have a look and see if there is a you who is having this look. Confirm the living presence that allows the reading of these words and check if there is a separate entity that can be located as the ‘owner/doer’ of this livingness.
When the absence of a personal doer is seen/understood -by no one- it is clear that there is no you having a life, no you having thoughts, no you making the decisions, and no you doing the living.
This ‘realization’ shows that there is no one to realize anything, and no one who has to wait for grace or the divine gift of understanding. It shows that all there is is This exactly AS IT IS; not as it shall be or become, but AS IT IS.
From here (not from ‘then onwards’) all is seen as the Body of the One and it is clear that it is truly life living life AS you and everything else.

I am not subject to space, therefore I know no 'where',
I am not subject to time, therefore I know no 'when',
What space-time is I am, and nothing finite appertains to me.
Being nowhere I am every 'where', being everywhere I am no 'where',
For I am neither any 'where' nor no 'where',
Neither inside nor outside any thing or no thing,
Neither above nor below, before nor after, at either side of any or no thing.
I do not belong to that which is perceptible or knowable,
Since perceiving and knowing is what I am,
I am not beyond hither or thither, within or without,
Because they too are what I am.
I am not extended in space, I am not developed in duration;
All these are my manifestations, all these are conceptual images of what I am,
For it is my absence, my absolute absence, which renders concepts conceivable.
I am ubiquitous, both as absence and as presence,
Since, as I,
I am neither present nor absent.
I can never be known as an object in mind,
For I am what is knowing, and even 'mind' is my object.

When there is...
Pray; when prayer appears,
laugh!; when there is laughing,
cry! when there is crying,
sing! when there is singing,
work! when there is work,
angry! if there is malice,
dance! if there is dancing,
speak!: if there is speaking,
make love!; if there is love or loving,
struggle!: if there is struggle,
be still!; if there is stillness
and wonder!: if there is wonder...

You are like a mirage in the desert, which the thirsty man thinks is water; but when he comes up to it he finds it is nothing. And where he thought it was, there he finds God.
Similarly, if you were to examine yourself, you would find it to be nothing, and instead you would find God.

Seeing the obvious!
Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson went on a camping trip. After a good meal and a bottle of wine, they lay down for the night and went to sleep. Some hours later, Holmes awoke and nudged his faithful friend. "Watson, look up and tell me what you see."
Watson replied, "I see millions and millions of stars."
"What does that tell you?", Holmes asked,
Watson pondered for a minute. "Astronomically, it tells me that there are millions of galaxies and potentially billions of planets. Astrologically, I observe that Saturn is in Virgo. Homologically, I deduce that the time is approximately a quarter past three. Theologically, I can see that God is all powerful and that we are small and insignificant. Meteorologically, I suspect that we will have a beautiful day tomorrow. Why, what does it tell YOU?"
Holmes was silent for a minute, then spoke. "Watson, you idiot. Some jerk has stolen our tent."
