Q & A.Question: In your book you say that pure awareness is the ultimate non dual reality. How could this be? Does awareness not need something to be aware of and does this not mean that awareness is dualistic? Answer: Good point, but in the same book you'll also find: "Zoom out, and Awareness and its content unify in a Self-luminous singularity about which nothing can be said or known for the simple reason that anything said or known is part-and-parcel of this singularity." The apparent duality of Awareness and its objects is a mind generated division. If there is awareness, so goes the reasoning, there must something else to be aware of. The mind, or the thinking process, can by its very nature only operate in the pairs of opposites - or in a gradient mix of them - such as; hot/cold, high/low, good/bad, subject/object, observer/observed and so on. However, Pure Awareness/Consciousness is the whole enchilada; the clouds, the birds and the sky... every-thing, as well as no-thing. Let us compare Awareness to something simple like a stick. We can say that the stick has a centre and two ends. The centre and the two ends are a way of conceptually dividing the stick - which can be great for practical purposes - but in actuality the centre and the two ends have no existence apart from the stick. We cannot remove them from the stick to end up with two separate ends without a centre, and a centre without two ends. The same goes for Awareness; conceptually it can be divided in the perceiver, the perceiving and the perceived, but in fact it constitutes a single indivisible whole. Perhaps it works better for you when we drop the words Awareness/Consciousness and replace them with IT. IT is not so easily turned into a dualistic picture by the mind. In clarity IT recognizes ItSelf as all there is and all there is not; uncaused and self shining. There is nothing apart from Pure Awareness, this One Substance, this One Taste or this Single Source... no matter how it may appear to the mind. In Hindu terms; All there is, is Brahman; Brahman is all there is. IT is absolute Oneness, magically disguised as multiplicity. This is the mystery, THIS is IT. Below you'll find some words from the 'Yoga Vasistha' emphasizing this in different ways.

The existence of consciousness cannot be denied.Even as heat is to a fire, whiteness to a conch-shell, firmness is to a mountain, liquidity to water, butter is to milk, coolness to ice, brightness is to illumination, oil is to mustard seed, flow is to a river, sweetness is to honey, ornament is to gold, aroma is to a flower - the universe is to consciousness. The world exists because consciousness is, and the world is the body of consciousness. There is no division, no difference, no distinction. Hence the universe can be said to be both real and unreal: real because of the reality of consciousness which is its own reality, and unreal because the universe does not exist as universe, independent of consciousness. (P50) The mountains, the forest, the earth and the sky - all these are but infinite consciousness. That alone is the very being of all, the reality in all. (P68) As all things are equally indwelt by intelligence, so at all times in every way the uncreated is all, the self of all. we use the expression 'all things': it is only a figure of speech, for only infinite consciousness or Brahman exists. Just as there is no division between a bracelet and gold, there is no division between the universe and the infinite consciousness. The latter alone is the universe: the universe as such is not infinite consciousness, just as the bracelet is made of gold but gold is not made of bracelet. (P71) The self remains itself even when the energies of the world throw up endless diversities on the surface of the ocean of consciousness. There are no independent entities in this world known as 'body' etc. What is seen as the body and what are seen as notions, the objects of perceptions, the perishable and the imperishable, thoughts and feelings and their meaning - all these are Brahman in Brahman, the infinite consciousness. (P271)

Quote of the moment!
I AM"I am the supporter of the universe, the father, the mother, and the grandfather. I am the object of knowledge, the sacred syllable OM, and the Vedas. I am the goal, the supporter, the Lord, the witness, the abode, the refuge, the friend, the origin, the dissolution, the foundation, the substratum, and the immutable seed."
From "The Bhagavad-Gita" as translated by Dr. Ramanada Prasad.
